Statement of Rights and new standards

Older people’s rights are at the heart of everything we do.

The Aged Care Act 2024 introduced a clear Statement of Rights that affirms your right to safety, respect, choice, information, culturally safe care and to speak up and be heard. You have the right to:

  • make your own decisions about your own life
  • have your decisions not just accepted, but respected
  • get information and support to help you make decisions
  • communicate your wishes, needs and preferences
  • feel safe and respected
  • have your culture and identity respected
  • stay connected with your community

At the same time, the Strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards set clearer, more measurable expectations for providers so you can have confidence in the quality and safety of your care. What this means for you:

  1. The organisation: Your provider must be well-run and have systems in place to ensure they are meeting all the standards
  2. The care and services: The care and services you receive should be safe, effective, and personalized to your needs and preferences
  3. The environment: You should feel safe and comfortable in the environment where you receive your care, whether it’s your own home or a residential facility
  4. Clinical care: You will receive safe, high-quality, and coordinated clinical care from competent professionals that meets your needs and goals
  5. Food and nutrition: You will have access to plenty of food and drinks that you enjoy, are nutritious, safe, and meet your dietary needs and preferences
  6. The residential community: In residential aged care, you should feel like you belong, are supported in your relationships, and are encouraged to be part of the community
  7. Feedback and complaints: You should feel safe to give feedback and make complaints, and your provider must take action to address them
